Washington - Asharq Al-Awsat, December 16, 2017 - A US strategic report issued by the Center for Preventive Action (CPA) that operates under the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) warned of a likelihood of military confrontation between the United States backed by its allies in the region and Iran.
In its tenth annual Preventive Priorities Survey, the CFR identified eight top conflict prevention priorities for the US in the year ahead, highlighting armed confrontations between the US and Iran as serious international concerns.
It wrote about “an armed confrontation between Iran and the United States or one of its allies over Iran's involvement in regional conflicts and support of militant proxy groups, including the Yemeni Houthis and Lebanese Hezbollah.”
According to the survey, which draws on the feedback of 436 government officials and foreign-policy experts, “among the eight new contingencies in this year's survey are the risks of intensified clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, and increased violence and political instability in the Sahel region of Africa.”
The survey points out at an elevated likelihood of US-Iranian confrontation over a range of explosive issues, starting from Iran’s missile and nuclear programs, to its competing for influence in Syria and Iraq, to its support for Yemeni, Lebanese, and Palestinian militant groups that the United States and US allies fiercely oppose.
In addition to Iran, the survey refers to a possible military conflict involving the United States, North Korea, and North Korea’s neighbors

Riyadh, Riyadh Daily, Dec. 17, 2017 - “Just as it was necessary to confront Daesh, it is far more imperative now to fight a hundred-times greater danger: the religious dictatorship in Iran, the IRGC and its mercenary militias.”
This was reiterated by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi , the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, in a speech to a conference in Paris focusing on “Explosive Conditions in Iran, Mullahs’ Regime in Crises”, on Saturday, December 16, 2017.
Mrs. Rajavi pointed out, “The international community has finally acknowledged the dangers and threats posed by the IRGC albeit long overdue. These statements are a positive step forward but not sufficient to confront the increasing damages caused by this destructive force and the heavy price the nations in the region have paid because of western governments’ appeasement of the regime over so many years.”

She emphasized, “The overthrow of the clerical regime is certain and within reach. This is the only solution to the problems in Iran, the region, and the world.

CBS News, Dec. 16, 2017 - Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations , on Thursday stood in front of an Iranian-made missile fired at the Riyadh airport by Houthi militants in Yemen, trying to rally the international community behind the Trump administration's sharp stance toward Iran. She was there to present what the U.S. describes as recovered pieces of a missile fired by Houthi militants from that Nov. 4 attack, pointing out the missile bears 'Iranian missile fingerprints.'
This, she said violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, a 2015 measure that prohibits Iran from providing weapons outside Iran without Security Council approval. Haley characterized it as evidence that was unmistakable, clear and devastating. It is rare for the U.S. to roll out this kind of intelligence but Haley worked with the White House, the Department of Defense and U.S. intelligence agencies on the revelation, which took place at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling -- home of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency.
Mr. Trump has advocated taking a harder line against Iran, and he often voices his disdain for the Iran nuclear deal. Last month he decertified the deal to Congress and is trying to coax members to make its terms harsher. Haley said her presentation had nothing to do with the Iran deal.
'The nuclear deal has done nothing to moderate the regime's conduct in other areas,' Haley argued. 'Aid from Iran's Revolutionary Guard to dangerous militias and terror groups is increasing. Its ballistic missiles and advanced weapons are turning up in war zones across the region. It's hard to find a conflict or a terrorist group in the Middle East that does not have Iran's fingerprints all over it.'
But European leaders have been resistant. They're deeply frustrated by what seems to them to be the Trump administration's attempt to bully them into altering or ditching the Iran nuclear deal, which they see as effective. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted a comparison of Haley's speech to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell's presentation to the UN of U.S. evidence of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction in 2003. The intelligence turned out to be wrong. Zarif tweeted the two events side by side.
